We returned to the hotel. This time, we did not have an
BOYS CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES invitation to the rabbi’s home for Friday night, so I made
arrangements with another caterer, who helped me make
FREE A 347.871.1621 contact with a number of people for the Friday night din-
ner at the hotel. A room was reserved for us in the hotel,
SOOHNVIOEPRRPDI$NE5R0GS where there was a Shabbos hotplate, hot water urn, a beau-
tifully set table, challahs, Shabbos candles, etc. The price
n 1614 AVENUE M, BROOKLYN NY was outrageous, but I thought the alternative would be to
eat a cold meal in our dark hotel room. Not wishing to
keep Shabbos like a Karaite, I decided to treat ourselves.
Since the kiddush in shul the previous Shabbos had left
me hungry, I figured a big meal would leave me with left-
overs for the post-kiddush hunger pangs.

I had previously gone over the menu with the caterer,
and even called with my credit card number from
Jerusalem. Now, a few hours before Shabbos, she asked me
to pay her in cash. She “didn’t remember” the previous
phone conversation. I was taken aback but gave her the
benefit of the doubt and dutifully obliged.

When we got back from shul Friday night, I was in for a
surprise. There was no traditional first course of gefilte fish.
There was chicken soup on the hotplate, which had a piece
of boiled chicken in it. We were given an extra bowl of
soup. Thank you. For the main course there was one piece
of baked chicken (bottom), noodle kugel, a salad of cucum-
bers and lettuce, and six boiled potatoes. One piece of
chicken for a meal that cost twice as much as a meal in an
expensive hotel in Jerusalem! For dessert, we had water-
melon, thoughtfully cut for us in advance. I forgot to men-
tion the soda. Some of the side dishes I had ordered were
not there. It was a rip-off.

Here is my recommendation, if you should happen to go
to Costa Rica: Contact the shul or rabbi and find out about
Shabbos hospitality. For Shabbos day, you can start with
the kiddush in the synagogue ($18), but have extra food at
the hotel to eat later. Reserve a room that has a small
refrigerator and a table with chairs. Perhaps you can search
on the internet for an apartment with a combination lock
so you don’t need a key. Or, if you are going to the hotel I
