1.32 socks per month resulting in a cumulative yearly increase
of 15.84 socks. (Don’t ask what 0.84 of a sock looks like; you
don’t want to know.) Now, 15.84 socks might not sound so
bad, but after almost 20 years of marriage, I’m dealing with a
sock pile totaling 316.8 socks. I needed some help here.

As we all know, there are many remedies for this particular
challenge. Here are a few that have not worked for me: I have
tried buying all the same color socks. This of course only lasts
until your children can talk. My occasional attempt to pair two

sock aficionados of my family is no longer a viable option. It
seems everyone over the age of three has a vested interest in
wearing a perfectly matched item of clothing that no one sees
under their skirts or pants legs. I have also tried using a gar-
ment bag, with the downfall being that the socks actually have
to be placed in the bag by the children whose little feet they
were just warming. Once, on impulse during a sleep-away
camp purchasing frenzy, I bought these cute little plastic rings
that you shove your socks into. The problem here was the
sharp, pointy spikes protruding from the inside that rip your
finger apart. Finally, I have tried the always dependable safety
pin, which is in fact the only method I have found some mod-
icum of success with – unfortunately, though, not enough.

“Sock isolation,” which is the psychological term for all the
