Yom Tov, and your family will have something filling in their Spring/Summer Line
stomachs with which to start off the Yom Tov. One surefire Arriving Daily
way to forestall crankiness is with good food!

Creating food traditions for Seder night is another great Pre-Yom Tov
way to keep your family calm. If they know it’s Bubby’s brisket

Mrs. Berson recommends downscaling the cooking if it’s WED. NIGHT 8-10 PM
going to be too overwhelming. “It’s better to have simple food OR BY APPOINTMENT
and more energy for the Seder than to feel pressured about
everything you need to do,” she says. The Seder, in her home, OLIAN • RIPE • MATERNAL AMERICAN
is usually very child-focused, and a major component to a JAPANESE WEEKEND • BELLYSIMA
happy atmosphere is having realistic expectations. “When
the kids were small, I was so busy with feeding and diaper- CRAVINGS RIKKI SHER • COTTON GLAM
ing that some years all I was able to say from the Haggadah
were the three words, ‘Pesach, matza, and maror,’” she
laughs. “We went through the years of little prizes and other
gimmicks to keep the kids interested. This is all part of chin-
uch. Don’t expect your children to behave more maturely
than they can – just do whatever makes them love
Yiddishkeit. If it’s the nuts and candies they get for answer-
ing questions, that’s what you need to focus on.”

Bring Home a Message
What message should we take away from the Seder? I ask
Rav Belsky. His answer comes immediately: “Pesach is zman
cheiruseinu, the time of our freedom. The Seder night
reminds us of how much Hashem loves us, and that the
geula (redemption) is imminent.

“Don’t allow yourself to lose sight of this in the midst of all
the myriad petty frustrations we encounter in the course of
preparing for Yom Tov or the unsettled feelings that Yom Tov
brings. Have patience, and don’t rush through anything.”

Rebbetzin Kaganoff adds, “The main message of the
Seder is hakaras hatov (gratitude). How fortunate we are that
we are the Chosen People, taken out of Mitzrayim by the
Master of the Universe Himself. We need to make this come
alive for ourselves and our children.”

Reflecting on the question, Mrs. Berson says, “I focus
most on my family, so I feel we had a successful Seder if
everyone gained something from it. It should be a positive
family bonding time. When the family is happy and bonded,
this opens up the channels for bonding with Hakadosh
Baruch Hu (G-d).”

May we all merit to achieve these lofty goals at our
Sedarim, and in this zechus (merit) see the geula, speedily in
our days!◆
