I would like to bring up a subject that I have not seen addressed in the WWW. As we scramble to work out details of child care for our kids on another "delayed opening/school closing day" as parents we are struck by how quick and seemingly insensitive our community's schools are to both canceling/delaying school, as well as giving days off in the school year. Recently the Jewish schools closed for the day on a light snow day while other schools opened late, (Baltimore City and County schools all opened.) While our children's safety and well being are the most important thing, these quick closing coupled with random professional days and unfriendly winter vacations schedules are difficult to work with. For example- this year the schools gave a "mid-winter vacation" (Friday/Monday long weekend) as the working world returned from their holiday vacations. It was not only difficult to explain the need for time off at that point but unfair to parents who could have capitalized on the legal holiday days and saved their vacation days for Yomim Tovim. It's not my intention to turn this into a discussion about the need for most families to have both parents work in order to afford a chance of affording anywhere near full tuition. However, considering the reality of the parnet's hectic lives and schedules while trying to raise their children and pay their bills, perhaps the schools could show a little more sensitivity in deciding on bad weather closings and setting their vacation schedules.
