Thoughts from a Rebbi

gemara

Dear Editor,

Two thoughts come to my mind as we attempt to weather the Corona crisis. Our Rabbonim have agonized over heart wrenching decisions to close shuls and yeshivos due to the severity of the situation. They have established guidelines, difficult for us to keep, but more difficult for them to make, for the sole purpose of keeping us safe. They have undoubtedly experienced many stressful and sleepless nights in the process, and we must recognize this and increase our respect for them and thank them for their selfless devotion to their flock; everyone of us.

Throughout the turmoil created by the Corona pandemic, Torah continues to be taught primarily through the means of modern technology. As a Rebbe, I experience firsthand how indispensable it has become in trying times like these. To interact with the bochurim I am fortunate to teach, and even see their faces while doing so, is very precious. I shudder to think what would have been lost had we not possessed this level of technology. Yet in spite of this, look how miserable we are when all we have is technology. How it pales in comparison to direct face to face communication with our peers, talmidim, and Rabbeim. What I would give to have a good one on one talk with a bochur, or be able to monitor their growth or lack thereof? I am confident that all of us are experiencing a great feeling of void and emptiness when the only mode of communication with those outside of our homes is via a screen. Perhaps this is something we should all remember when this madness ends bimhaira viyamainu; the value of face to face communication, genuine reality as opposed to virtual reality.

May this tzara end quickly and may the experience aid us to increase respect for our Rabbonim chashuvim, and prioritize in the future in a more healthy fashion.
