BIKE-A-THON Dear Readers,
by Rochelle “…Mi bamayim umiba’esh, Who by water and who by fire?”
Goldberg Soon we will recite the list of strange and sudden deaths in Unesana Tokef. Usually, these words seem

34 more poetry than reality. They are not.
The stories and pictures of the devastation wrought by the Houston flood are horrific and unbelievable.
BAT AYIN
by Sara Bracha We won’t go into the details, which are available in the media. Rather, we want to consider how we in Balti-

We all live with certain assumptions: that if we need food, we can go to the store; that clean water is
46 available from the faucet; and that sanitation is a matter of a toilet flush. If the power goes out, there are
flashlights and candles, and we can survive a day or two without air conditioning. In the worst scenario, if
LIVING LIFE things get really bad, we can always get in our cars and drive to our friends and relatives in New Jersey and
TO THE END New York. Right?
by Rabbi Daniel
Wrong. The great flood of Houston reminds us that the manmade systems we build to support our lives
Rose and ensure our comfort and are, in truth, fragile. A whole city can shut down in a day. People can lose their
homes, cars, furniture, clothing, computers, and photographs in the space of hours.

As we write, the focus in Houston is on escaping the water and staying alive. In the coming weeks,
AN INSANE TRIP months, and years, people will be overwhelmed with trying to recover their possessions, financial stability,
by D. Katz and sense of security.

76 We often read about catastrophes “somewhere else.” We feel bad and then move on. This one is close to
home. Many Jews in Houston will be suffering for a very long time. If we care about community, if the con-
ASK THE cept of klal means anything to us, we need to step up to the plate now and help.
SHADCHAN
by Mashe Katz The message is not original. We simply repeat what is being said in private emails, conversations, and
national news: The tragedy is great but the outpouring of help and prayer from people far and wide gives not
80 only material aid but also inspiration and hope to those who have lost so much.
